Travelling in the Fortress Hohensalzburg

If you are travelling in the Salzburg - Fortress Hohensalzburg is almost impossible to miss - and you should not miss it.

Fortress Hohensalzburg in the night

Funicular path to Fortress

First things to check

  • Get a Salzburg card - just getting to Fortress with funicular cost 11,30e (8,00e with footpath), but with Salzburg card you can do it once for free.
  • Normally - I prefer walking and hiking up - but going up with fortress funicular and walking down with footpath is actually good idea, because funicular and footpath are totally opposite locations in the fortress.
  • Fortress is large - there is few museums and things to do, if you try check them all, it might take quite many hours, perhaps even full day. Museums are also free with Salzburg card - once.

Landscape views from Hohensalzburg

When you come from Fortress funicular - there is two different landscape view - to old town of Salzburg and to backside view of the Salzburg.

Old town of Salzburg from Fortress Backside view of Fortress

NOTE: Try to not miss the Old town of the Salzburg view from Fortress, if you see backside view of the fortress first, turn back, and try find the Salzburg view.

Entering into inside of Hohensalzburg

After viewing Landscape views - you get into Fortress, which is very interesting, outdoor streets are straight, wide and take you around the fortress.

When you just keep walking around the fortress, you can see the well, cannon view to outside, little church and many other things...

Museum Hohensalzburg

Fortress Museum is definitely worthy to visit at the same time, there is a lot information about fortress's daily life, weapons, kitchen, royal rooms and even the torture chamber.

How to get to Hallstatt from Salzburg

If you are visiting in the Salzburg, Austria, Hallstatt is definitely worthy to visit, so I try tell the best route with cheap price and nice landscape views to Hallstatt from Salzburg for one day trip.

The trip to Hallstatt takes one full day, leaving early morning and getting back to Salzburg at evening.

Iconic view of Hallstatt

First things to check:

  • Make sure it's not rainy day by weather forecast – There is a lot walking in Hallstatt outdoor, and strong rainy day is not good.
  • Try make sure it's not public holiday in Austria, nor Sunday. Public transport is better in working days and Saturdays – also there might be less people in Hallstatt.
  • This my plan is NOT valid in public holidays or Sundays, if you really need to take a trip to Hallstatt in public holidays or Sundays - you have to travel with train thru Atthang-Puncheim when you return from Hallstatt to Salzburg in Public Holidays or Sundays. The route via Atthang-Puncheim is not more difficult, it's just more expensive.
  • Even after reading this, double check route planning via ÖBB Route planner (ÖBB is great site to plan routes in Austria). NOTE: ÖBB Route planner doesn't cover ferry routes in Hallstatt. These instructions are from my travel in 2014, so in theory, it's possible that some timetable information are changed.

The route from Salzburg to Hallstatt

Staying multiple days in the Hallstatt

If you would like to stay Hallstatt area few days, I would suggest stay in Hotel at Obertraun (and hotel near Obertraun train station), because:

Hallstatt Bahn to Salt mines
  • You don't need to carry luggage into ferry boat – it's just easier to walk just into train in Obertraun.
  • If you have no return ticket - it's easier to buy in Obertraun train station.
  • It's easy to walk to Hallstatt from Obertraun (4-5km perhaps), or take a ferry in summer times.
  • Obertraun have cable car to mountains area that are just awesome. NOTE: Obertraun cable car is open only at summer time
  • In summer time - You can go to Salt mines in Hallstatt and you can take full tour with ship. You cannot see everything in one day in summer. All (few) fountains are also closed during the winter.
  • There is also Hallstatt museum - that takes it's own time.

But overall – Hallstatt is just great place to visit – if you can have only one day – it's still definitely worthy to visit – even in Winter.
